Large company, international operations, end-of-life assets. What could go wrong?
Ask the global company who decided to get a handle on their current IT Asset Disposition process and found they had 35 different ITAD partners spread across 50 countries.
What does it mean to have 35 partners?
Well, it means 35 different contracts, to start. Different processes. Different metrics. And a virtually impossible task to roll up reporting for the organization as a whole.
And perhaps most significant, no economy of scale.
So how did they get here?
The path may be familiar to many. First, the company had never implemented a unified approach to new hardware acquisition, which meant there was no basis on which to build a unified approach to hardware end-of-life.
Next, the company structure was a combination of organic growth and mergers / acquisitions. As a result, their ITAD landscape was a mix of independent ITAD programs adopted by various operating units plus an array of legacy ITAD solutions acquired along with the companies running them.
The good news was that, overall, the company was doing a reasonable job of routing end-of-life assets into programs designed to safeguard data and foster responsible recycling.
The bad news was they had little consistency and control…and serious reporting shortfalls.
Bringing order to chaos
Once the company decided to gain control and consolidate their ITAD programs, their primary goals were straightforward: reduce program complexity, centralize program details and execution, receive consolidated program reporting across the organization, and save money.
The core requirements of the program would be partner competence, consistency, and coverage. But were there other important things to consider when choosing an international ITAD partner?
Yes.
Here are the key things to look at when selecting a global ITAD partner
