Cost-Effective Overnight Shipping & Delivery Tactics to Delight Your Customers

Cost-Effective Overnight Shipping & Delivery Tactics to Delight Your CustomersSignificantly, 62% of ecommerce shoppers define a positive online shopping experience by how fast they receive their online orders. In fact, 80% of online shoppers agree that fast and free shipping (next-day or better) is the number one factor that would encourage them to purchase more online, and an impressive 61% of consumers are willing to pay more for it! Thanks to Amazon, consumers now consider 2-day delivery to be the norm and expect even faster delivery options at check-out. While next-day delivery may not seem financially or even logistically feasible, with the right approach and partners, it is — and it’s a great way to decrease cart abandonment, win against competition, gain credibility as a brand, and drive customer loyalty. What is Overnight Shipping?Overnight shipping is a delivery option that enables customers to receive their order the next business day. Overnight, next-day and same-day shipping are often used interchangeably. While overnight shipping is fast, if you see that it’s “guaranteed,” take that with a grain of salt. The ability to receive something overnight is dependent on a given parcel carrier’s order cut-off time, meaning your order has to be received, picked and packed early enough in the day to be within the carrier’s window of operation for that day. Outside of those hours, overnight delivery cannot be guaranteed. This also applies to orders placed over the weekend.
Why Offer Next-Day Shipping?Providing your customers with shipping options and being transparent about how long delivery can take should be a key part of your ecommerce fulfillment strategy. For customer ease and convenience, it’s ideal to offer 2-3 shipping options. Generally, these include standard shipping, 2-day shipping, and overnight or next-day expedited shipping. Offering an array of choices will help you capture customers and offering next-day shipping opens up new opportunities for the ‘need it now’ demographic. You may also gain marketing material by listing your products as ‘arriving on time’ or ‘in time for the holidays’. One helpful tip: With overnight shipping, it’s imperative to clearly state cut-off times and how your weekend fulfillment plays into the delivery date calculation. Transparency and predictability is the key to customer satisfaction — no one wants to pay for expediting shipping, only to find out that it’s not quite as fast as they thought it would be!
What About Costs? The cost of overnight shipping is dependent on a variety of factors, including package dimensions, dimensional weight, and shipping zone (the product’s proximity to the delivery address). Many carriers offer discounts for small businesses or high shipping volumes. If you don’t have the order volume to qualify for discounts independently, cost-effective transportation rates can be achieved by partnering with a third-party logistics company (3PL).
