4 reasons to choose – or not to choose – onsite data erasure or destruction services
If your company is like most, when it’s time to take your servers, PCs, laptops, tablets, and smart phones out of service you engage an experienced IT Asset Disposition (ITAD) provider.
But did you know you have a choice in how that provider handles your assets?
In addition to the traditional ITAD model – in which the partner transports your assets in locked containers and/or locked trucks to a secure facility for processing – most ITAD companies can further help you eliminate risk by bringing data destruction to you.
When you select onsite service, your ITAD partner can either erase the data from each drive using erasure software or they can shred, pulverize, or degauss your hard drives before transport to their facility for further processing.
Both approaches are secure and valid. Which factors should influence your decision?
Choose onsite sanitization or destruction if:
- Your corporate standard requires that all data be destroyed before assets leave your facility
- You have unique requirements and want your IT staff available to guide the data sanitization process
- You need to observe hard drive destruction
- You’re decommissioning a Data Center and want to combine data sanitization with deinstallation services.
Choose traditional processing at an ITAD provider’s facility if you need a secure – yet less costly –option or:
- Your corporate standard doesn’t require onsite data destruction
- You don’t have room to stage equipment for processing at your facility
- Your location doesn’t permit shredding or pulverizing operations onsite
- You’re working with a reputable ITAD provider who provides indemnification and a range of transport security options.
Regardless of which solution or combination of solutions you choose, your ITAD partners should provide complete chain-of-custody controls from processing through disposition as well as an itemized Audit Report accompanied by a Certificate of Recycling & Data Erasure and Destruction for each asset.
