Ingram Micro ITAD Celebrates Earth Day 2019
April 22, 2019
Irvine, Calif. – April 22, 2019
Each year on Earth Day, Ingram Micro ITAD pauses to take a look at the environmental savings we’ve achieved for our clients by virtue of our rigorous e‑waste recycling program.
The EPA recently released new environmental calculators, updating the basis for the calculations to match the mix of materials found in today’s end-of-life equipment While devices still contain a toxic blend of chemicals and metals, the new calculators take into account improvements in the manufacturing and composition of the IT equipment we use to run our lives and our businesses.
The 2018 Infographic show below lists admirable results for the environmental savings we’ve achieved through recycling equipment we collect from our clients and diverting as much as we can for reuse. And that’s an important point: the most valuable element of our overall environmental mission is supporting sustainability.
When you consider that roughly 50 million tons of e‑waste is generated worldwide each year – of which 70% is still incinerated or goes to landfills – even stellar results are only a drop in the bucket. Yes, recycling is good…but reuse is even better! In fact, Ingram Micro ITAD supported sustainability through reuse by successfully processing an impressive 74% of the notebooks and PCs we receive from clients for reuse.
As companies have become more cognizant of the need to partner with an IT Asset Disposition partner to ensure data security and environmentally-responsible recycling, they increasingly choose e-Stewards and R2 certified companies. Using environmental stewardship as a guideline brings the benefit of looking at end-of-service devices not as things to recycling, but as resources that may have a strong potential for reuse.
Keeping assets out of landfills and increasing the amount of time they stay in service brings numerous benefits. To a company with thousands or tens of thousands of assets, a focus on end-to-end IT Service Management (ITSM) means choosing assets wisely at the point of purchase; developing – or out-sourcing – in-service repair options to keep assets working and employees productive; and recouping some of the initial equipment investment by working with a partner who can refurbish and remarket assets removed from service.
Ingram Micro ITAD provides a full range of ITSM services, and at IT asset end-of-service we support sustainability by evaluating equipment to determine which assets have resale potential and which can be cost-effectively refurbished.
As our infographic illustrates, Ingram Micro ITAD does an excellent job of ensuring that end-of-live assets are responsibly recycled or remarketed. We’re justifiably pleased with our recycling results, and even prouder of our ability to identify, refurbish, and remarket those assets that have the potential to enjoy second – and sometimes third – lives.
